GQNRC provides an after-school program 4-5 days per week during the school year and summer. Youth receive academic support, mentoring and life skills education, and opportunities to engage in positive recreational activities and service learning projects. We stress the importance of education by assisting the children with homework and developing a sense of commitment to education by improving school attendance and setting educational and career goals.
We collaborate with community organizations to provide additional free services for our students:
Big Brother, Big Sister provides trained mentors on-site that connect with our youth and give students an opportunity to have open, confidential conversations with someone they can trust.
A to Z Literacy volunteers visit our resource center to host literacy nights (in both English and Spanish). These evening events include an interactive reading session with the students and reading techniques for parents. The organization has also generously donated bookshelves full of books for our students!
On space donated by our neighboring Ace Hardware, we have created a community garden space. With the help of grants, we have updated the garden with raised beds and a composter! We hope to continue to expand this project incorporating an environmental/gardening curriculum for our students to include hands-on, outdoor workshops.
